Brazil ANVISA’s Role Questioned
The role of Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) recently underwent close examination to determine whether the agency has excessive authority. At a hearing this past month, conducted by the Committee on Social Security and Family of Brazil’s House of Representatives, several points emerged.
Hearing Discussion
During the hearing, Deputy Director of ANVISA Neilton Araújo argued that cutting back the agency’s regulatory authority will result in a public health setback. Federal Assistant Attorney Victor Valencia brought up the need for public discussion to devise a better working model. There was additional discussion regarding the need for greater harmonization of the legal framework for the healthcare sector, especially given the current differences between federal and state regulations in Brazil.
View from Biopharma Sector
Sandra Campos, a representative of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), a reputable Brazilian Biopharma research organization, explained that there is a problem with too many regulations in Brazil. She pointed out that ANVISA’s regulations are often too technical, making them difficult to follow, and that they tend to be higher in quantity rather than quality, as anyone who recently had Portuguese medical documents translated can attest to.
