German as a Language
German is a West Germanic language most closely related to Dutch, English and Frisian. It is one of the most commonly spoken languages, with approximately 120 million native speakers and 80 million non-native speakers worldwide. While it is primarily spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, there are also native German speakers in Northern Italy (in the Province of Bolzano-Bozen), in the East Cantons of Belgium and the French regions of Alsace and Lorraine, and in the former German colony of Namibia.
Over the last 200 years, German immigrants have settled in many countries throughout the world, most notably in the United States, Canada, Brazil and Argentina. Over 100,000 German political refugees and entrepreneurs came to Latin America in the 20th century. In Brazil, the majority of German speakers are found in the Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Sao Paulo.
In the United States, German is the fifth most spoken language after English, Spanish, Chinese and French. In North and South Dakota it is the second most commonly spoken language after English. There are more Americans with German ancestry than any other ethnic group, an influence visible in the many German names of American cities such as Bismarck, Munich, Karlsruhe and Strasburg in North Dakota, or Berlin and Germantown in Wisconsin.
