Portuguese as a Language
With 220 million native speakers and another 40 million learners, Portuguese is the sixth most widely spoken language in the world and the predominant one in the southern hemisphere. It is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, Cape Verde, and Guinea-Bissau. Due to heavy Portuguese colonization, it is also spoken in parts of India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. After Spanish, Portuguese is the most commonly spoken language in South America and one of the official languages of the European Union and Mercosul. Today, Brazil has the most speakers.
Like several other Western European languages, Portuguese is a Romance language deriving from Latin. It evolved from the medieval language spoken by the Kingdom of Galicia in the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula. Galicia was the first kingdom to arise during the retaking of the Peninsula from the Moors, who invaded centuries earlier.
Spanish and Brazilian writers such as Miguel de Cervantes and Olavo Bilac have described Portuguese as “sweet” and “gracious.” It is the second fastest-growing European language after English and looks to a future as an international language of South America and southern Africa. There has also been a renewal of interest and study of Portuguese in Asia, where it once dominated trade as the official language of Macau.

These translations look great. You have done a great job making the Russian science jargon into understandable English sentences. It is also impressive that you managed to translate the last application with only a few days’ notice. Thank you for the high quality work!
