Turkish as a Language
Turkish is spoken by over 70 million people in Turkey, where it is the official language, as well as by Turkish immigrant populations worldwide. At least thirty-five other countries have a significant number of speakers, among them Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, El Salvador, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Honduras, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the Republic of Macedonia, Romania, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and Uzbekistan. Turkish is also the native language for people in areas that were governed by the Ottoman Empire.
Bulgaria is home to over a million Turkish speakers. About 50,000 speakers live in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Azerbaijan. In Cyprus, Turkish is a co-official language (with Greek) spoken as a first language by 19% of the population, especially in the North. Over 1.5 million speakers live in Macedonia and Greece; over 2.5 million in Germany and other northern European countries. About 40,000 Turkish speakers reside in the United States. The closest relatives of Turkish are Gagauz and Azeri; speakers of these languages have some level of mutual comprehension.
Turkish has its roots in Central Asia. The first written records date back approximately 1,200 years. From the 6th to the 11th centuries, the Turkic languages spread across Central Asia, covering a vast geographical region stretching from Siberia to Europe and the Mediterranean. The rise of the Ottoman Empire further extended the geographical reach of the language.
There are several dialects of Turkish that can be divided according to region. These dialects include Danubian, Eskişehir (spoken in Eskişehir Province), Razgrad, Dinler, Rumelian, Karamanli (spoken in Karaman Province), Edirne (spoken in Edirne), Gaziantep (spoken in Gaziantep Province), and Urfa (spoken in Şanlıurfa Province). Modern standard Turkish is based on the language spoken in Istanbul, Turkey’s cultural and economic capital.
