International Translation Day is celebrated every year on September 30th. The tradition first originated as a tribute to Saint Jerome, considered the patron saint of translators for his translation of the bible. A Christian scholar and priest, St. Jerome was the first to translate the bible from Hebrew to Latin.
Celebrate International Translation Day!
Established by the International Federation of Translators (FIT) in 1953, the annual celebration of International Translation Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of translators who help to bring the world closer by breaking down language barriers. Although historically the majority of translations were conducted on literary works, the importance of professional translators and translation services has grown proportionately with increased international travel and the globalization of businesses.
Translation Day Goes Global
In 1991, FIT launched the idea of an officially recognized International Translation Day to show solidarity among members of the translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries. The event soon became an opportunity to display pride in a profession that is becoming increasingly essential.
It is encouraging to see that International Translation Day has developed into a genuine event for the profession. All over the world, translators are shown appreciation and given the opportunity to take pride in their work and their achievements. From year to year, more associations in a growing number of countries report on their activities.
Translation vs Interpretation
What better opportunity than today to clarify something which seems to be a point of confusion for many: Is there a difference between translation and interpreting services?
Interpreting and translation are two closely related linguistic disciplines, yet they are rarely performed by the same people. On the surface, it would seem that the only difference between interpreting and translation is the medium: oral and written word, respectively. But the difference in skills, training, and even language knowledge are so substantial that few people can do both successfully on a professional level.
