What’s Next for the Unitary Patent?
EU Unitary Patent Update
Did you know that the European Patent Office (EPO), responsible for implementing the unitary patent system, is one of the largest European institutions, and that along with patent offices in China, Japan, Korea and the U.S., it is one of the largest patenting authorities in the world? But where does the EU unitary patent system stand, and what impact does it have for future legal and ip translation, as well as for people looking to patent their work in the future?
Will Russian Biotech Survive Crimea?
Russian Biotech Resilient Despite Crimea
Sanctions imposed by the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) are said to be pushing Russia toward a recession as economic penalties increase following the Russian government’s annexation of Crimea from the Ukraine. Despite changes in the political climate, the Russian biotech sector has proved to be one of the most resilient.
In March, only one of the four major biotech ETF’s declined as a result of political pressure, and one was actually reported to have increased. ETF’s or Exchange Traded Funds are a good indication of the status of a particular industry. April brought increased political pressure, but did not result in major changes to the industry. To date, the Russian biotech sector has not shown any indication of being significantly affected by rising political tensions between Russia and the West.
Over the past few years, the Russian biotech industry has shown great growth potential as a result of government investment. Backed by significant government funding, foreign-Russian collaboration has blossomed, with a growing number of partnerships between U.S. and Russian innovative biotech companies. But changing attitudes and the threat of increasing political and economic sanctions, there is serious concern over the effect this will have on the country’s emerging economy.
According to Sergei Guriev, a leading Russian economist, the Russian economy may already have been experiencing a slowdown even before the annexation of Crimea. Some analysts predict that the deterioration of relations with the West will eventually negatively effect the Russian economy along with growing industries such as biotech. At the same time, others feel that it is a passing political crisis.

The Role of Russian Interpretation in Russian Investment in Cuban Biotech
Russian Investment in Cuba’s Biotech Industry
A new law which opens Cuba up to foreign investment, along with a shift in the country’s relations with the EU, is aimed at seeking outside support to help boost the economy. The new foreign investment law, approved on March 29, 2014, invites foreign (including Russian) investors to operate in main sectors of the Cuban economy. Russia is one of fifteen countries who have already invested in the island country. With the new law, companies can be funded entirely by foreign capital, eliminating the state maintained control practiced by the previous law.
Leaders of the Russian and Cuban delegations signed an agreement in November of 2013 designating a plan of action that would be beneficial to both countries. The aim of this plan is to strengthen the mutual promotion of goods and services in both markets and promote direct contact between Moscow and Havana through greater collaboration – an effort in which Russian interpreting services will play a vital role.
The plan also emphasizes further development of priority areas including industry, culture, health, agriculture, transportation, and science and technology. During a meeting, held on the opening day of the 2014 Havana International Fair, the two countries stressed the need to expedite the negotiation process. Among the main items addressed is the need to resolve customs issues to facilitate the introduction of health and biotechnology products into the Russian market.

New Unitary Patent in the European Union
EU Unitary Patent System
The European Union (EU) has agreed on a new patent system which will allow the European Patent Office (EPO) to grant single unitary patents. EU member states, with the exception of a few including Italy and Spain, will adopt the new system effective January 1, 2014 or on the date of entry of the Agreement on a Unified Patent Court, whichever occurs last. The main advantages of this new system: 1) Broader geographical rights can be obtained for a single, renewable fee, and 2) Less translation requirements for EU patents – in most cases translation services will be required in only one language.
Biotech Patents in the European Union
Biotech Patents in the EU
In December of last year, the European Commission (EC) appointed a team of experts to examine the development and implications of patent law in the field of biotechnology and genetic engineering. Made up of fifteen individuals with expertise in the areas of intellectual property law, research and development, life sciences and biotechnology, the main purpose of this group has been to provide the EC with legal and technical expertise on the Biotech Patent Directive, with regard to “patentable” biotechnological innovations.
EU Medical Device Regulations
Medical Device Regulations in the EU
A major issue impacting the EU medical device sector was the vote by the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) in favor of a new stricter regulatory framework. In September 2012, the European Commission adopted a proposal for the regulation of medical devices and in vitro diagnostic medical devices, replacing the existing three directives. The new regulations, which were finally agreed on June 2016, required that certain devices went through a pre-market assessment process by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). They will come into effect during the first semester of 2017 after final approval by the European Council and the European Parliament.
California Vetoes Medical Interpreters Bill
Multiple studies have reported the serious consequences that result from language barriers and poor communication between physicians and the patients they treat. In California, where more than 40% of the population speaks a language other than English, the role of medical interpreters cannot be ignored.
