Language Connections Completes Russian Translation of Political Screenplay

Russian Translation that Retains the Artist’s Voice
Language Connections rendered a Russian translation to English of a short, artistic film script. The film’s script was highly lyrical, employing many metaphors and similes. The aim of the film was to share the creator’s political philosophies, some of which are highly abstract and controversial. Providing a Russian translation for something like this was a delicate task with 2 major challenges: idiomatic language and retaining the emotion and style of the source text.
The first challenge Language Connections’ translators needed to handle was the profusion of idioms in the script. Translating idioms word for word between any languages will always turn out badly. This task required our translators to understand, then localize the idioms they came across. They needed to find American English versions of the idioms that would speak to an audience here. Once this issue was resolved, it was time to get to work translating the rest of the script.
Language Connections approached translating the entirety of the script with a keen eye to the beauty and emotion of the language. Since the film is largely a narration, the focus on the power and poetic nature of the language became all the more salient. Readers of the script needed to feel the same emotional impact as their Russian counterparts got. The voice of the artist needed to be alive and well within the script, whether it was in Russian or English!
