October 2017, Boston MA – Language Connections, a Boston interpreting and translation services provider, has provided academic translation services and linguistic support for more than two decades. One of our regular clients, a) renowned academic center, often requests our services for international conferences and lectures held at the university’s well-known School of Government.
We regularly provide linguistic services for the Brazil program, and this year we also supported the Taiwan Executive Leadership programs. For the Taiwan programs offered this fall, we provided Taiwanese translation of all the required course materials, in addition to simultaneous interpreting..
Taiwanese Translation & Interpreting Services
For the Taiwan Executive Leadership Program, we were asked to provide traditional Chinese translation and interpreting, adapted for the Taiwanese audience, over the course of the one-week program. Since the Chinese language used in Taiwan differs from that of mainland China, we chose a team of linguists that were native Taiwanese-Chinese speakers.
We translated all program materials including case studies, student session sheets and presentation slides for the Taiwanese participants. Additionally, we provided a team of Taiwanese interpreters that were responsible for facilitating during the lectures and events included in the program.
What Are The Differences Between The Chinese Used In Taiwan and In Mainland China?
Taiwanese Chinese differs from that in mainland China both in its written and spoken forms. While both speak Mandarin Chinese, years of isolation between the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan led to variations in pronunciation of certain words.
There are also instances of phrases or words developing independently in one of the languages as well as the same words developing different meanings between Taiwan and mainland China. As such, Taiwanese interpreters need to be aware of the tonal and verbal differences in order to provide clear and well received, communication.
In terms of the written form, Traditional Chinese characters are used primarily in Taiwan, whereas Simplified Mandarin Chinese characters are used in mainland China. As such, our Taiwanese translation services centered on translating texts using the traditional Chinese characters, and further adapting the language to better suit the audience from Taiwan.
