Chinese Subtitle Services for “The Shooting of Big Man”
April 2017 – Boston, MA – Language Connections, a Boston translation and interpreting services company, provides linguistic services for all types of multimedia, including videos.
In a recent project, our linguists provided English to Chinese video subtitling services for a law documentary entitled “The Shooting of Big Man: Anatomy of a Criminal Case,” and the legal case that followed. The film will be presented to high-profile Chinese guests at a legal forum on March 20, 2017.
Our client, Harman United, is focused on international legal education and promoting conversation between China and the U.S. The company provides analysis of the U.S. and China’s legal systems in order to guide business leaders in both countries through issues affecting transnational commerce.
The project for which they requested our video subtitle services is a 1 hour and 40 minute-long documentary film which was videotaped under the direction of Harvard Law School. The film presents a case of assault with intent to commit murder originally reported by ABC News, and then details the case as it was passed through the US criminal judicial system.
Known as The Shooting of Big Man, the video of the case was originally recorded in English, but our client needed it for a native Chinese speaking audience.
Law Documentary Subtitle Services
Providing translation services for the legal documentary required that our linguists provide transcription, translation and subtitling services for all of the oral content on the original video recording. The client specifically requested Traditional Chinese subtitles, as opposed to Simplified Chinese.
Traditional Chinese is, in short, slightly more complex than Simplified Chinese – due to a larger volume of characters used.
Generally, materials targeted to Chinese audiences use Simplified Chinese Characters as the majority of the population of China uses that particular dialect. That being said, Traditional Chinese is used in areas such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Malaysia, and there is a push to return to using the traditional characters in China.
In the case of our client, their primary target audience was more familiar with Traditional Chinese, and as such the Chinese subtitles needed to reflect the audience’s needs.
