As with most informed consent forms, the challenge was twofold: to handle the project with a tight deadline and to walk the line between accuracy and clarity for the patients who received the forms. Firstly, the tight turnaround time was imperative because of the ethics committee’s deadlines. If Language connections didn’t provide clinical research translation services quickly enough, the client would not have been in good standing with the ethics committee– which controls its ability to move forward with the study at all! The repercussions could have been severe, or even just a complete end to the study.
The second challenge was the requirement to walk the line between accuracy and clarity. Informed consent forms are often deeply technical, both from a medical and legal standpoint. Many of these words are not simply translated from one language to another, especially when the medical, and legal systems are different. Besides aiming for technical accuracy, Language Connections wanted our pharmaceutical translation to be readable for the patients that the forms were meant for. Having forms that are technically accurate but full of impenetrable language makes them entirely useless. It was our job to provide clinical research translation services that rendered a document that was both technically accurate and user friendly for the patients who’d receive them.
Results
By working with this client on their project, Language Connections was able to contribute to a bigger goal: aiding patients in protecting themselves.
