Case Study: Interpreting at BIO International Convention 2015

June 15th-18th marked the 2015 annual BIO International Convention, where over 15,000 global experts in the life science industry gathered in Philadelphia to discuss the current and future advances of the biotechnology industry. For the fourth consecutive year Language Connections provided comprehensive linguistic support including multilingual translation of pre-event marketing materials as well as conference interpreting solutions for numerous events throughout the course of the convention.

The Client:

Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) represents more than 1,100 – companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations in over 30 countries including the United States. One of the main functions of BIO is to host the annual convention which brings together global experts in a range of areas from drug discovery and bio manufacturing to nanotechnology and cell therapy. This event provides life science companies from around the world the opportunity to present, exhibit and network, while attending cutting edge discussions in the field of biotechnology.

As an official language service provider for BIO, our responsibilities at the 2015 BIO International Convention encompassed a wide range of topics and events. The client required translation of all pre-event marketing materials as well as interpreting services in Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish at the conference. In addition, portable sets of interpreting equipment were needed for tours and site visits.

Foreign delegates had complex and diverse schedules which made the coordination of the interpreters and equipment rather challenging. Numerous interpreting events were taking place simultaneously in different locations, and each demanded attention to logistics. Outstanding organizational skills were required to make the event run smoothly.

The Solution:

Because of our extensive experience coordinating large-scale projects in numerous languages, BIO chose Language Connections to facilitate linguistic support during the convention. In addition to multilingual translation of marketing materials prior to the event, we selected teams of skilled simultaneous interpreters with subject-matter expertise in six languages.

Our experience working at the BIO International Convention in previous years allowed us to smoothly coordinate all interpreting events, from meetings with international government officials and delegations to discussions between corporate and academic clients.

Below are the interpreting events we were involved in during the 2015 convention:

Turkish Interpreters: The Turkish interpreters were responsible for simultaneous interpretation at a panel discussing Turkey’s efforts to increase economic growth through biotechnological advances. The panel had six speakers, ranging from the Managing Director of the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey, to the Senior VP for International Affairs of BIO itself.

Mandarin Interpreters: The Mandarin interpreters provided simultaneous interpretation for a discussion entitled “Recent Development in Technical Review of Biosimilar in China”. The presentation, given by Dr. Yang Jinbo of the China FDA, discussed regulatory issues and advances in the biopharmaceutical market in China.

Spanish Interpreters: The Spanish interpreters worked at a panel on the success of biotechnology in Latin America and current investment initiatives. They provided simultaneous interpreting for a panel of three. They also interpreted for a session discussing regulations, guidelines, and trends in biotherapeutics in Latin America.

Russian Interpreters: The Russian interpreters provided guided interpretation (with portable equipment) for Luidmila Ogorodova, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, and Ilya Kazeev of the Life Science Department of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. They toured the MossRehab Center and provided interpretation for meetings and Bioeconomy and Biotechnology discussions throughout the day.

Today, Language Connections is a preferred language services provider to BIO and continues to support the organization in its international communication efforts.
