COMMUNICATION ACCESS REAL-TIME TRANSLATION (CART) SERVICES
Communication Access Real-Time Translation (also called live captioning) is an instant translation of verbal language into text using a stenotype machine, notebook computer and real-time software. CART services are provided by a stenographer who transcribes text in real time. Participants can see that text through several devices including TV’s, mobile phones or computers. Live captioning is primarily used by speakers, presenters, organizations or institutions to provide access to a wider audience, including individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired. However, this interpretation service can also be used by people with learning disabilities or those who are learning English as a second language.
Whenever you need on-call reliable real-time captioning, Language Connections can help you communicate effectively. We offer a full range of CART services in a variety of settings, including but not limited to:
- Meetings
- Conferences
- Lectures and talks
- Courtroom hearings
- Medical appointments
- Classrooms
- Training sessions
- Telephone conferences
The text produced by our CART services team can be displayed on an individual’s computer monitor, projected onto a screen, combined with a video presentation to appear as captions. We can also make text available using other transmission and display systems.
Benefits of Providing CART Services
CART services can be extremely beneficial for various situations, including symposia, presentations, or other business related affairs. The three main benefits to providing CART services are:
- Flexibility – CART can be used in multiple settings and the stenographer does not always need to be at the location.
- Simplicity – All that is required is a high speed internet connection, conference communication (Skype), and a device in order to view the text being rendered.
- Transcription – Transcripts can be readily available prior to the event to give CART users a better understanding of the content they will see presented.
Remote versus Onsite CART Services
There are two main types of CART services that can be provided depending on the setting of your event, and the needs of your audience. Both methods involve the transcription of text onto a screen that is easily accessible to those using the services.
Remote CART Services
Remote CART involves the streaming of text to a secure internet URL for viewing. This can be displayed on multiple devices, and is used primarily for big groups such as lectures and conferences. Remote CART services are easier to schedule and when multiple stenographers are needed there isn’t double charging.
Requirements: Internet connections, display devices, and method to ensure the real-time writer hears the audio, Skype and StreamText (program).
Onsite CART Services
Onsite CART services require the stenographer to physically attend your meeting, presentation, class etc. During your event, the stenographer renders what is being said onto a large display screen, easily seen by those in the audience who require the interpretation services. Having this interaction allows for a more comprehensive experience for not only those with hearing difficulties, but also all other participants.
The Need For CART (Live Captioning) Services
Communications Access Real-time Translation (CART) is a speech-to-text captioning service we offer for working with the deaf and the hard of hearing. In some cases, not providing equal communication access could be a violation of the ADA or the Rehabilitation Act. (This is something that needs to be determined by the individual or organization responsible for the event.) Language Connections has over a decade of experience coordinating CART support for our clients. We will work with you to choose the best solution for your event.
