Translation for UN Ocean Conference
May 2017, Boston MA – Language Connections, a Boston based translation and interpreting services agency, works with agencies and institutions to provide international development translation services.
Language Connections has enjoyed providing conference translation for the UN in the past. This past May, the Sustainable Development Section of the United Nations Department of Public Information requested our professional translators to assist in preparation for an international conference on environmental issues impacting the earth’s oceans.
The Ocean Conference
In early June, the United Nations held a five-day conference to promote ocean sustainability. Called The Ocean Conference, it was the first United Nations event of its kind. It coincided with World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8), and provided an opportunity to mobilize action to reverse the cycle of ocean decline worldwide.
For the event, the client asked us to provide multilingual versions of the program content translated into the five native languages of non-English-speaking participants.
What is the UN Department of Public Information?
The Department of Public Information (DPI) was established in 1946 to promote global awareness. The Division for Sustainable Development (DSD) works within the United Nations framework to provide leadership in the implementation of internationally agreed upon development goals.
Among other mandates, it hosts the Forum on Sustainable Development, the central platform within the United Nations system for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted in September 2015.
Translation Services for the UN
Providing translation for the UN requires almost flawless execution, as both the attendees of the conferences, and the conference implications are extremely important.
This conference was a high-level political forum attended by leaders from around the world. The client requested that we provide multilingual translation of cards, and other related content, containing facts and information on the sustainability and decline of the world’s oceans to be used at the conference.
The materials needed to be translated into the following five languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish for event participators. In addition to the “ocean cards” our translation for the UN conference covered background materials, an overview of the conference, and FAQS and infographics associated with the content from English into each of the five languages listed above.
Our linguists were chosen according to their language skills and understanding of the program topics – this allowed them to provide highly accurate translation services with little to no errors.
