On-site Interpreting For Mayor Michelle Wu’s
Inauguration and State of the City Address
Boston, MA: Language Connections has a long-standing partnership with the City of Boston, supporting a wide range of public and private events. One of the most complex projects this year was the State of the City event, combined with Inauguration Day, a private event requiring extensive on-site interpreting services as well as planning under tight timelines and heightened security.
Event Scope and Complexity
The City requested in-person interpretation in nine languages, while our interpreters were positioned in a separate area from the main program, delivering on-site interpreting with the help of radio transmitter equipment supplied by the client. While the setup was planned in advance, technical limitations emerged on site due to distance and signal constraints between rooms.
Coordination and On-Site Interpreting Management
To manage the scale and complexity of the on site interpretation services, Language Connections assigned a dedicated project manager to be at the venue. In the days leading up to the event, our team coordinated interpreter scheduling, parking logistics, security access and preparation materials, all while accommodating multiple last minute updates to speeches and program content.
When technical challenges arose, our on-site project manager worked closely with City staff and professional interpreters to adjust workflows in real time. Through clear communication, flexibility and quick decision-making, our team ensured that interpretation continued smoothly and without disruption to the program.
The Result
Despite a demanding environment, evolving materials and technical constraints beyond our direct control, the event was a success. All language needs were met, transitions were handled efficiently and attendees were able to access the program in their preferred language.
