Multilingual Conference Services for MIT Program
Boston MA 2017– Language Connections frequently provides interpreting services for international conferences, and conference translation services. Recently MIT Sloan School of Management, one of our clients for Higher Education translation services and interpreting, offered their annual Global Executive Academy (GEA) program for international executives. We have been fortunate enough to help provide full conference interpreting and translation services for the program since its inception.
This year’s GEA program included business executives from Brazil, China and parts of Latin America.
What Is The GEA?
The Global Executive Academy (GEA) program is aimed at teaching executives from around the globe how to improve upper management skills. GEA is unique in that it’s various lectures and sessions are offered simultaneously in multiple languages. In order for the program to be successful, it requires high-level simultaneous interpretation, as well as expert translation of all program materials in the native languages of all of the participants. Each year the participants and language needs vary, so all program materials must be adjusted accordingly.
Multilingual Interpreting For International Conferences
This year’s GEA required three different teams of linguists: Mandarin Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese and Latin American Spanish, to translate and interpret for the program.
This included translating pre-program marketing brochures, relevant website pages, lecture materials such as PowerPoint presentation slides, and post-program course evaluations. All translated multimedia materials needed to be standardized for the lectures, so that they were equivalent across all four languages.
During the lectures, our teams of expert simultaneous interpreters facilitated classroom lectures in Mandarin Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish. Due to the style of the programs, our interpreters also needed to provide relay interpreting during discussions where more than one language was being spoken.
What Is Relay Interpreting?
Interpreting for international conferences often involves multiple languages. Relay interpreting is needed when there are multiple people interacting with each other in different languages at a given event. It requires one interpreter to render the speaker’s message in a language common to all the interpreters present, so they can then render the message into their respective target languages. In the case of GEA, a given interpreter would render his or her participants’ questions or comments from their native language into English. Then the rest of the interpreters would render the message from English into their respective languages.
