French Interpreting for Academic Conference
March 2017- Boston, MA – Language Connections, a Boston-based interpretation and translation services agency, often facilitates at various departments at one of Boston’s major academic institutions. This month we provided French interpreting services during a program hosted by our client. The one-day conference, “Diversity and inclusion: challenges and solutions. French and American Perspectives “, was a student-led symposium on diversity organized by the university’s Francophile Club and Vice-President Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion with support from the French Consulate.
The symposium was set up as a series of discussion panels followed by “action-oriented panel” dialogues or breakout sessions. An introductory talk was given in French on “Europe between religious identity and religious freedom” followed by panel discussions on various topics such as “Inclusion through public policy in France and the US” and “The relation between individual and collective identities.” Breakout sessions focused on how to deal with conflict and challenges in diverse settings both in France and the United States.
French Simultaneous Interpreting Services
Our role during the symposium was to provide French simultaneous interpreting services during both the panel discussions as well as the breakout sessions. Talks were given in French and English, and participants that were not bilingual in both languages received interpreting as needed. Our French interpreters were familiar with the topics discussed, as well as current social events in France, the U.S. and Europe which helped them easily and accurately facilitate the discussions. As often interpreters must predict what speakers say in order to account for variances in sentence structure and to avoid awkward pauses, having a background knowledge in the topics of the symposium is beneficial for smooth communication. Practical solutions were discussed, and conclusions from the discussions provided in both English and French.
