English Video Subtitling of Hamlet

April 2017 – Boston, MA – Language Connections, a Boston-based translation and interpreting services agency,frequently works with Higher Education institutions to provide education translation services and support of all types. MIT is one of our regular clients whom we have partnered with for a number of years and in several departments.

As a continuation of our ongoing services for the MIT Literature Department, we were asked to provide transcription, translation and subtitling services into English for a study comparing the interpretation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet adapted for other languages. In the past, we provided English subtitling from Polish and Japanese performances for this project.

Part of the MIT Global Shakespeare Video & Performance Archive, the MIT Literature Department started this project in an effort to demonstrate the diversity of productions of Shakespeare’s plays from around the world. This would be useful in facilitating cultural exchange as well as interesting linguistically.

English Video Subtitling Services

For this particular project the department requested that Language Connections construct English language subtitles for videos of “Hamlet” acted out in Chinese, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese. These performances were filmed with actors speaking in their native language, and then audio transcriptions were translated back into English and added as subtitles to allow for a direct comparison of the different language versions.
