English to Spanish Medical Translation for University Center for the Developing Child Studies
Sept 2017, Boston MA – Language Connections, a Boston translation services provider, works with many Higher Education institutions and Scientific research initiatives to help them overcome language barriers when conducting research. In a recent project we were asked to provide an English to Spanish life sciences translation of clinical site materials to be used in a field study conducted by the Center on the Developing Child at a Boston area university. The Center on the Developing Child uses scientific advances to improve the outcomes of children facing difficulties by implementing policies, at both the local and international levels, and practices based on the needs of the children and their families.
Translation for Spanish Speaking Clinical Research Participants
When The Center contacted us, the staff were preparing to launch a clinical study at several pediatric practice sites. Our role was to provide English to Spanish medical translation of the various clinical study documents. These would be used by Spanish speaking patients and their families included in the population participating in the study.
Clinical research translation requires high attention to detail and precision, especially when recruiting and introducing patients to a new study. If documents aren’t properly translated, patients may enroll in studies without legally binding informed consent, they may not fully understand the parameters of the trial, or they may decide not to participate in the trial at all.
The work we completed for the centers included translation of informed consent forms, parent questionnaires, field test recruitment forms, and the recruitment script. Our client requested that the translations be culturally adapted for Latin American Spanish speakers. We assigned a team of Spanish translators familiar with the Latin American usage of the language, as well as with scientific research, who completed the project on time and to the satisfaction of the team at the academic institution.
