Russian Consecutive Interpreting: MIT “Forbidden Research”

Boston, MA – On July 21, 2016 MIT hosted “Forbidden Research,” a day full of talks from industry experts about pushing the boundaries that limit research developments and social progress. Language Connections, a Boston-based interpretation and translation services agency, provided conference interpreting, During the event, topics ranged from MIT’s hacking culture to genetic engineering. The modes of interpreting during the event included Russian consecutive interpreting and Japanese whisper interpreting. Russian Consecutive Interpreting Services

Alexandra Elbakyan, a Russian software developer, joined the event by teleconference to offer her input on illegally disseminating scientific research. She violated U.S. law by launching Sci-Hub, a website that increased access to paywalled academic content. She delivered her presentation in English, but answered audience questions in Russian. Language Connections provided Russian consecutive interpreting for her responses during the question and answer session.

Our Japanese interpreter also accompanied a Japanese visitor to all the events, where the interpreter took notes while summarizing spoken content for her client. She utilized a technique known as whisper interpreting, during which the interpreter whispers into the ear of the person requiring interpreting services as the presenter speaks.
