Companies in three different countries, the German-based chemical company, BASF, the US-based agricultural product company, Cargill, and the Danish industrial enzyme developer, Novozymes, recently signed an agreement to develop a new technology that will produce acrylic acid from renewable resources. Their primary target market: biodegradable diapers, as well as other products that rely on super absorbant polymers. BASF is the world’s largest producer of acrylic acid, an important industrial chemical used in a variety of consumer end products, including of course diapers. Cargill and Novozyme have been researching a new technology to produce the chemical from renewable resources since 2008.
Currently, acrylic acid is produced during the refining process by oxidizing propylene derived from crude oil. The new technology will produce acrylic acid from renewable feedstock using microorganisms that convert sugar into a chemical precursor for the synthesis of acrylic acid. The sugar monomers will come primarily from corn, which is low- cost and mass-produced as a feedcrop.
Considering the demand for less plastic waste as well as the global pressure to decrease our dependence on oil, the disposable diaper made from renewable carbon sources is expected to be a big global success on the market. So this tri-company, international collaboration will soon be the first to develop a biodegradable diaper made from sugar!
