Leo Galperin, President of Language Connections, spoke on May 5th at the 16th Annual New England Translator’s Association (NETA) Conference and Exhibition which took place in Boston.
NETA is a non-profit organization established by and for translators and interpreters in the New England area. Among the organization’s main goals are to promote the recognition of translating and interpreting services as a profession, support the training of translators and interpreters through lectures and courses, and provide a medium for collaboration with persons in allied professions. NETA’s annual meeting brings together translators and interpreters along with related agencies such as language service providers in the New England area to update and facilitate communication regarding issues related to the profession.
This year our company president was invited to speak regarding the issue of vendor/agency relationships during the Working with Agencies discussion session. He gave a one hour talk followed by a Q&A session which focused on the following topics currently impacting the industry: Vendor selection, specialization, costs and competitive markets, outsourcing, medical interpreter training programs, and the shortage of local interpreters. The response from the audience during the Q & A session reflected the high level of interest in these topics as well as the effectiveness of his message. In particular, his talk sparked further discussion about the importance of specialization in interpreting and translation services as well as the difficulty of meeting costs in today’s economic situation.
