In a recent study involving elderly asthma patients, poorer medical outcomes were directly associated with limited language skills and language barriers. The study, conducted by researchers at Mt Sinai Medical School, performed a direct comparison of medical outcomes among 268 elderly asthma patients (60 years or older) who were receiving primary care at clinics in New York City and Chicago. Among study participants, 68% were of non-Hispanic origin, 18% were proficient in English and of Hispanic origin, and 14% were of Hispanic origin but had limited English proficiency (LEP).
Language Barriers an Issue in Medicine
The results of this study demonstrated that Hispanic patients with LEP had significantly worse control over their asthma symptoms, increased probability of inpatient visits, and poorer quality of life. LEP was also strongly associated with poorer adherence to medication. The results of the study remained the same even after adjustments were made for demographics, asthma history, morbidity, depression, and health literacy. The importance of overcoming the language barriers in the practice of medicine is clearly shown in this study. Although it is neither surprising nor entirely new, it continues to be an issue that needs to be addressed.

“This prospective study of elderly patients with asthma demonstrates several associations between limited English proficiency and increased asthma morbidity. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanism for these effects of limited English proficiency if health outcomes are to be optimized for elderly inner-city patients with asthma.” Juan P. Wisnivesky, M.D.,PhD, Mount Sinai Medical School, NYC.
