Similar to previously mentioned countries, it celebrates labor rights of the working class. Labor Day commemorates a100,000-person rally that was held in front of the presidential palace in Manila in 1903. The Filipino Democratic Labor union, who organized the rally, demanded workers’ economic rights and Philippine independence. However, the holiday first took effect almost a decade later, on May 1st, 1913.
Labor Day History of South Africa
Labor Day in South Africa, or “Werkersdag,” its Afrikaans translation, has been celebrated as a national holiday in the country each year since 1994. Its instatement is one of the most recent ones, with mostly millennials being consistent beneficiaries of the holiday. It commemorates the struggle of the working class’ labor movement in the late 20th century to win fair employment conditions and worker rights in the country. The demand for the instatement of Labor Day as a national holiday was also a part of the fight by black labor unions against the Apartheid Government of South Africa.
