According to the WHO, mental and neurological disorders (MNDs) are currently responsible for 13% of illnesses around the world. Depression alone affects more than 350 million people worldwide and will be the largest cause of disease by 2030. Due to our limited knowledge of these disorders, developing effective treatments has been one of the greatest challenges to date. The fact that many MNDs are not well understood has not only added to the challenge of developing new medicines, but it has also complicated efforts to improve diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, therapies for MNDs require on average 35% more time to obtain regulatory approval compared with medicines for other diseases. Although these issues must be addressed primarily by the pharmaceutical industry, many other sectors are also significantly impacted.
IFPMA’s Publication on Mental and Neurological Disorders
The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) recently released a publication outlining policy recommendations to address the growing burden of MNDs on the world’s populations. The publication, entitled “Mental and Neurological Disorders: Innovative therapies, innovative collaborations”, was appropriately released on World Mental Health Day last month. In releasing this publication, the aim of IFPMA – which represents research-based pharmaceutical companies and associations worldwide – is to encourage greater consideration of the impact of these disorders, by providing an update on current efforts and establishing methods for future research and collaboration.
“Our companies have made substantial investments and progress towards deepening the understanding of how the brain works. Many research challenges remain, and more innovation is clearly needed both in and beyond the labs to address this growing health priority.”
Eduardo Pisani, Director of IFPMA
