The origin of Father’s Day is uncertain, but what’s for sure is that it is celebrated in a great number of places around the world. In the United States, fathers are celebrated on the third Sunday in June (as it is in the Netherlands, France, and Argentina), and it is customary for children to give gifts and perhaps have a special meal as a family. Here are some fun facts about Father’s Day around the world to celebrate fathers everywhere!
Father’s Day in South Korea
In South Korea, fathers are celebrated in conjunction with mothers on May 8th, and it is accordingly called Parents’ Day. To acknowledge love and respect for their parents, children gift carnations to them as well as to other significant adults in their lives.
Father’s Day in Australia
The state of Victoria in Australia has a particularly dramatic way of celebrating its Father’s Day – on the first day of spring in September, 32 people from 32 municipalities are crowned as ‘father of the year’.
Father’s Day in Thailand
In Thailand it is celebrated in conjunction with the king’s birthday on December 5. This is because the king is considered to be the father of the whole country. People traditionally wear yellow, and fathers and grandfathers are given the canna flower, which is associated with masculinity.
Germany
Germany has a rugged tradition when it comes to that celebration. It is referred to as ‘Men’s Day’ or ‘Gentlemen’s Day’; to celebrate, men typically go on male-only hikes and other gatherings, many of which involve alcohol and sometimes, pulling a wagon around town.
Mexico
Although not an official holiday, father’s day in Mexico is greatly celebrated with food and music; in addition, there is a 21 kilometer race held in honor of fathers in Mexico City’s Bosque de Tlalpan (Forest of Tlalpan).
Make sure to get your father or grandfather a gift this Sunday! If all else fails, considering starting a new tradition like calling your father and serenading him with a special song.
