With the weather getting warmer and summer just beginning, people around the world are preparing for their annual summer traditions. There are so many different global summer traditions all celebrating various things from a country’s history, to honoring their gods, to simply rejoicing over the promise of warmer weather. Below are five of these amazing summer traditions from around the world (that even the corporate interpreter will enjoy!).
1) Aomori Nebuta Matsuri Festival, Japan
To start off this list, there is the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri Festival in Japan. This amazing multi-day festival takes place between August 2nd and August 7th. Meticulously crafted lantern floats move through the streets of Japan during this period. The floats are meant to honor gods and various mythical characters. The top three floats are even eligible to showcase their work on a trip around the bay on the last day of the festival!
2) La Tomatina, Spain
Moving into Europe for the next tradition, there is La Tomatina in Buñol, Spain. This fun-filled festival is a local favorite. Taking place on the last Wednesday of August, tens of thousands of people flock to Buñol to celebrate this tradition. Hundreds of tomatoes are thrown in this massive celebratory food fight. While the day-of event itself is extremely fun, there are also festivities that occur in the week leading up to the celebration including paella contests.
3) Mayan Solstice, Guatemala
In Guatemala, during the summer solstice, you have the chance to get a glimpse of the history and traditions of the Mayan culture. The Mayan ruins of Tikal still play host to various rituals that have been performed for centuries. Rituals are performed at some of the various temples within the ruins. This is an amazing summer tradition and a great chance to learn more about other cultures and their histories all while experiencing the breathtaking architecture of the ruins.
4) Midnight Sun Festival, United States
Next, there is the Midnight Sun Festival in Fairbanks, Alaska, in the United States. Around the summer solstice, Alaska has full days of sun. This makes it the perfect time to visit and truly take advantage of all the Midnight Sun Festival has to offer! You could see live music, engage in other fun activities, or go watch the Midnight Sun Game, a traditional late night baseball game held during the festival!
5) Solstice Bonfires, Austria
To finish off this list, there are the solstice bonfires in Austria. These bonfires celebrate the extended hours of sunlight. They are inspired by customs stemming from ancient tribes. Today, people come from all over the world to experience these bonfires. People gather around different fires and celebrate summer together with beautiful scenery surrounding them. If you have the chance, it’s definitely a tradition worth experiencing!
