In order to clearly understand materials being presented to you, or communicate effectively with others, work must be done to eliminate limiting language barriers. Being able to access healthcare in an area that does not speak your first language, or find reliable and understandable educational or financial information in your preferred language is key to ensuring a more equitable world. However, not everyone has the resources to access professional translating services. The below three nonprofit organizations have been doing major work related to providing global translation services or language-related services to work towards ensuring equitable access to resources, and preservation of languages spoken around the world.
1) Translators without Borders
Translators without Borders is a great organization that works to support global translation services to provide individuals with important materials in their native languages. They work with nonprofit organizations in the crisis relief, humanitarian, and education sectors to provide translators through a network of volunteer translators. In this way, Translators without Borders can extend their reach and ensure that as many people as possible can have access to these potentially lifesaving materials. Additionally, to ensure that as many people can be supported as possible, Translators without Borders also seeks to train news translators in less frequently requested languages to ensure that no one’s linguistic needs get forgotten. For nonprofits in need of an international translator or global translation services, Translators without Borders will be able to partner with them to provide them access to the translation services that they may not have been able to procure on their own.
2) 7000 Languages
7000 Languages is another nonprofit organization striving to aid those whose native languages are considered endangered. They work closely with indigenous communities around the world to help them teach, learn, and sustain their native languages. 7000 Languages focuses on education through technology. One of the main ways they seek to serve these communities is through providing them with learning materials and technologies to aid in the learning and preservation of these languages. While not strictly providing academic translation or elearning translation, 7000 Languages is engaged, to some extent, with elearning localization by adapting their technologies and materials to ensure that they will work well and be effective in the communities they serve. Through their work, 7000 Languages has been able to serve indigenous communities around the world, provide them with educational materials and technologies, all while not charging the indigenous communities at all for these materials. 7000 Languages is truly committed to uplifting the indigenous communities they serve and preserving their languages.
3) Institute of International Education
The Institute of International Education (IIE), while not directly engaged with global translation services and would not necessarily be the organization to go to in search of a global translator, has an equally important linguistic goal. As the name suggests, the IIE is focused on international education. They have a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion and support programs centered on multiculturalism as well. Through their scholarship and grant programs, they have been able to further the education of a wide range of individuals and groups. Additionally, they strive to help people around the world connect with each other, gain access to resources and opportunities necessary to advancing their scholarship and personal development, and help boost communities all to encourage the creation of a more peaceful and equitable world.
