Translation Services for an International Marketing Survey

Survey Says…in 11 Languages
This project was basically a request to translate a survey for potential customers into 11 different languages. There were a few translation challenges and a few non-translation challenges that made it complicated, though. In terms of challenges unrelated to translation, the project was time-sensitive, with a short deadline. It also had some technical components, meaning the surveys had to be translated and rendered in a way that was accessible online. This meant finding and fixing any coding errors so the user experience was flawless.
The translation challenges centered mostly around localization issues. The survey needed to be translated in a way that made sense to citizens of 11 different countries. That meant a real variation of cultural norms that affected the way the questions were posed. It was particularly necessary to use localization services to make the questions appeal to East Asian participants because of some of their cultural differences from Western participants. Besides localization issues, the sheer size of the project made the translation QA process more complex. Checking over translations of the survey for 11 different languages (quickly, of course because of the deadline) required plenty of organization.
The Result

Instead of being limited to English-speaking participants, the marketing firm was now able to reach a far more diverse group of potential customers.
