Simultaneous Interpretation Services at UN Conference on Gender Equality
March 2017 – Boston, MA – As part of a global effort towards gender equality (and in line with this year’s International Women’s Day on March 8th) a delegation of locally elected women traveled to the United Nations (UN) headquarters in NYC to discuss gender equality in government leadership positions with the 61st UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
The CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. This delegation was done per the initiative of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Standing Committee on Gender Equality.
Held on March 13 2017, discussions centered on questions of how gender and localization relate to one another, the role of locally elected women, and how to increase the ratio of women elected in local government on a global level. The measure of progress in global gender equality, through the global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicators, will allow for women to be counted in local government positions.
Our client, the UCLG Standing Committee on Gender Equality, represents and defends the interests of local governments around the world. They also advocate for democratic, local self-government. UCLG required French interpreters and Spanish interpreters for the event.
French & Spanish UN Simultaneous Interpretation Services
Language Connections provided simultaneous interpreting services services in Spanish and French for non-native English speakers attending events during the conference.
Topics for which we facilitated included talks on “Women for Sustainable Development in Africa: Engaging Women in the Achievement of the SDGs” and “Locally Elected Women: Making the SDGs Happen.”
Discussions tended to be very fluid, so interpreters received only talking points in advance for which they could prepare. This meant that they needed to have a strong background in the subjects discussed in order to keep up with the speakers.
That same evening, we were asked to interpret a supplemental event for another client, UN Habitat, which works to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities.
A United Nations Human Settlement Program, UN Habitat hosted a discussion for which they required our French simultaneous interpreting services. The topics surrounding the event involved “Women’s Role in the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda: Harnessing and Strengthening Sustainable Urbanization Using Participatory Methodologies for Women and Youth Empowerment.”
