Universal Professional Development Framework
In a recent study regarding the feasibility of implementing a universal professional development framework for researchers across Europe, the European Science Foundation reported significant differences among European countries in terms of their overall awareness and readiness to invest in career development. At the same time, however, there is a demand among European researchers for a more structured approach to professional development and active career planning.
The main goal of the study was to determine to what extent a generic framework for the professional development of researchers based on the Researcher Development Framework (RDF) can be applied across Europe. The RDF is a British framework set up with the purpose to better define professional profiles and support the continuous professional development of researchers. With regard to the functionality of the RDF as a pan-European framework, Martin Hynes, CEO of the European Science Foundation stated: “This new study has revealed that within Europe there is a clear need for a European Researcher Development Framework which can aid researcher´s professional development. The adoption of the RDF, adapted as recommended in the report, would also be a great tool for supporting intersectoral mobility.”
