German Language and Translation The German language is primarily spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. However, there are also native speakers in Northern Italy (in the Province of Bolzano-Bozen), in the East Cantons of Belgium and the French regions of Alsace and Lorraine, and in the former German colony of Namibia. Over the last 200 years, German immigrants have settled in many countries throughout the world. The largest groups of German immigrants are in the United States, Canada, Brazil and Argentina. During the 20th century, over 100,000 German political refugees and entrepreneurs settled in Latin America. In Brazil, the majority of German speakers are found in the Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Sao Paulo. German is the fifth most spoken language in the United States - after English, Spanish, Chinese and French – and in North and South Dakota German is the second most commonly spoken language after English. One indication of the German presence and influence in the United States is the many German names of places such as Bismarck, Munich, Karlsruhe and Strasburg in North Dakota or Berlin and Germantown in Wisconsin.
