Japanese as a Language

Japanese, 日本語 (Nihongo, or “origin-of-the-sun language”), is the native language of more than 125 million people, almost all of whom reside in Japan. The largest groups of expatriate speakers live in the Americas, primarily Hawaii, where 12% of the population speaks it. There are also several million speakers in Brazil and in the rest of the United States, as well as in some communities in Vancouver, Canada.

As compared to nearly all the other major languages, Japanese is quite discrete. A common misconception is that Japanese and Chinese are closely related. In fact, they come from entirely different language groups, despite being neighbors geographically. Even so, Chinese has had a heavy influence on Japanese, which uses Chinese characters for many words. These are pronounced with both a Chinese reading and a separate, native Japanese reading.

Aside from the Chinese characters, called kanji, Japanese utilizes two syllabic systems, hiragana and katana, which mirror each other. The latter is used almost exclusively for writing non-native words, such as borrowings from English and other European languages.

Today, Japanese is a highly popular language for foreign study, despite its status as one of the most difficult languages to learn. This is a stark contrast to the recent past: in 1940, only 65 Americans with no Japanese ancestry were able to speak and read it fluently. The surge of interest in Japanese in the Americas, Europe and the rest of Asia over the past few decades has been largely driven by the explosion of the Japanese economy during the 1980s and the pervasive popularity of Japanese pop culture, primarily anime and video games, since the 1990s.
