February 29, 2016 – Language Connections, a translation and interpreting company based in Boston, MA, provided foreign language services at the IHS Energy CERAWeek 2016 Executive Conference which took place in Houston, Texas last week (February 22 – 26). Hosted by IHS CERA – Cambridge Energy Research Association – this is an annual event that brings together energy experts, political leaders and top IHS analysts from around the world. It is considered one of the largest and most important conferences in the field of energy, encompassing oil, gas, power, and coal markets worldwide.
This year’s participants included energy leaders from Australia, Japan, India, China, Middle East, United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Among the impressive list of speakers were Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Naimi, Saudi Arabian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, who delivered a Special Oil Address, and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who received the IHS CERAWeek Global Energy Lifetime Achievement Award and gave the Opening Address.
We have participated at this large international conference for several consecutive years. This year, at the 35th Anniversary of IHS CERAWeek, our expert Spanish and French interpreters facilitated breakout sessions, meetings and discussions, including Spanish simultaneous interpreting during the Mexican President’s Opening Address. Due to the multilingual audience, it was also necessary to use relay interpreting, a complex process which requires synchronized interpreting from a source language into a common language, and then into the language of the target audience. In short, this type of event requires much coordination as well as highly skilled interpreter.
Language Connections supplied full linguistic support and interpreting equipment for Spanish, French, Chinese and Russian speakers attending the conference, including several soundproof booths and portable headsets (receivers) for all 1,500 participants. Our expert linguists once again were able to ensure smooth communication throughout the five-day conference.
