Italian as a Language

Italian is a Romance language descended from Vulgar Latin, as are French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian, though Italian remains the least changed in terms of vocabulary. With over 60 million native speakers, it is primarily used in Italy and Vatican City but is also an official language in Switzerland, San Marino, Malta and the European Union. Italian is also found in expatriate communities in Europe, Australia and North America.
Until quite recently Italy was divided into city-states, each with its own culture and dialect of Italian. Though the country unified, regional dialects are still widely spoken alongside standard Italian. The standardized language is based on the Tuscan dialect spoken in Northern Italy, specifically Florence, home of the famed poet Dante Alighieri. Dante’s Divina Commedia was read throughout the country after its publication in the 14th century, and the dialect it was written in became the standard of all educated Italians.
The Italian Renaissance sparked a renewal of the language’s strength and prestige. Still, there was much disagreement as to how to standardize it for every Italian, including the uneducated. It was not until Napoleon’s conquest of Italy in the early 19th century that movement towards a single, unified Italy began in earnest. Even so, when the nation unified in 1861, only 2.5% of its population could speak the standardized dialect.
