French Language and Translation
French is a Romance Language spoken officially in over 30 countries. It descended from Latin, but was influenced by the Celtic languages of Gaul and the Germanic language of the Franks. It has evolved now into over 25 dialects spoken all over the world, however Metropolitan French, or the French spoken in Paris, is still considered the standard.

French is the official language in France along with in 30 other countries. It is the first language of most people from France, part of Switzerland, Monaco, part of Belgium, and Quebec, while it is a strong contender for the second language of most of Africa. For over three centuries after the Middle Ages, French was the language of international diplomacy and of the international upper class. It still remains one of the official languages of the United Nations.

With the colonization by both France and Belgium during the 18th and 20th centuries, French spread to all regions of the world, most prominently in the Americas, Africa, South-East Asia, and the Caribbean. In the United States even, it remains a secondary language in parts of Louisiana and New England.

There where two main languages used in the region: langue d’oc and langue d’oïl. Both names comes from the respective words for “yes” (oïl and oc), with langue d’oc being found in the South of France and langue d’oïl in the North. Langue d’oïl evolved into standard French, while langue d’oc transformed into Occitan, which is still used today. Its usage has dwindled however in the last century since French became the official language of France.
